The Proper Use Of A High Pressure Centrifugal Pump

A high-pressure centrifugal pump that is designed for dewatering applications can be used to remove standing water from a construction site, empty a pool, or transfer liquid from one body of water to another. Due to the high velocity and pressure that this type of equipment is noted for, precautions should be taken to prevent disruptions to the pumping process.

Approved Liquids And Pump Styles

A high-pressure centrifugal pump is used to transport liquids or gases. A centrifugal pump that is designated for dewatering should not be exposed to unapproved substances. Any water that contains flammable or corrosive materials could potentially damage the internal components of the equipment.

Centrifugal pumps consist of fixed and mobile models. A fixed unit would be one that is going to be used in an industrial setting. This type of pump can be bolted to flooring to prevent the equipment from moving around while it is activated. A mobile pump unit is one that can be used indoors or outdoors, in either a commercial or residential setting. A smaller unit will be easier to handle than a large, fixed model. 

Access And Inspections

While a high-pressure centrifugal pump is turned on, it should be kept away from other equipment. If you are going to be conducting dewatering sessions in a warehouse or another type of industrial setting, purchase a fixed model and have it installed near the water source. Leave several feet between the pump and the water. Make sure that no other equipment that will be activated will be in the way of the pump.

If a pump is going to be used outdoors, the same rules apply. Keep the pump in an area that is relatively close to the area that is being dewatered, but make sure that the pump will not be around other equipment that is going to be turned on. A centrifugal pump can run hot if the equipment is used improperly. The suction and discharge line should remain open, to minimize overheating occurrences.

Overheating could damage the motor and the other internal pump components. A hot pump could also burn or blister skin. An operator of a pump should wear gloves while actively using the equipment. Upon completing a dewatering session, an inspection of the equipment should be performed. A suction line blockage or an air leak could hinder a pump's performance. A vacuum gauge is a tool that can be used to detect problems.
