Are You In Charge Of The Clean Up Team After A Disaster?
Posted on: 8 April 2018
Did you actually live through something like a flood or a tornado yourself? Perhaps you just saw the footage of the disaster on the news. Whatever has prompted you to be part of a clean-up team after a disaster has done its horrible devastation, you will more than likely be considered an actual angel on earth as you help residents to get their lives back to whatever is considered normal as they rebuild their lives and clean up their property. If you have volunteered, or if you have been asked, to be in charge of a relief team, from making arrangements for medical waste disposal to bringing personal care kits, here are some ideas that might help you to be very effective in your efforts.
Medical Waste Disposal - Besides homes being hit by a disaster, even doctors offices and hospitals might have been a target of the natural disaster. Unless you are qualified to take care of medical waste, it would be best for you to leave that to professionals. It might be that an organization like the Red Cross has already notified a company that takes care of medical waste already. If not, that might be one of the first things you should do.
By notifying professionals, you can be sure that those who come to assist will have the training to take care of medical waste in an efficient, safe way. They will also bring equipment and waste bins that are for the sole purpose of gathering the medical waste and of taking it to a designated place where it will be disposed of in a way that won't harm the environment.
Designate Others - Since you are in charge of a team, consider designating others to do major jobs. For example, it might be good for one person, or a small team, to gather things like blankets, towels and other linens. Another team might be in charge of putting together personal care kits that contain things like shampoo, a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, a small sewing kit, and feminine hygiene items.
Yet another team might be in charge of putting together box meals that have non-perishable items in them. For example, the boxed meals could include a bottle of water, pre-packaged granola bars, and commercially produced fruit snacks. Don't forget to bring things like toys and coloring books for children who might be bored and even scared.
