3 Important Tips to Consider When Shopping at Pawn Shops

Posted on: 26 February 2018

Shopping at a pawn shop can be an exciting experience. Often times, you can find some hidden gems at an affordable price. To make sure these shopping experiences stay pleasant, though, you'll want to keep these tips in mind.

Do Your Research

Whatever you're looking for at a pawn shop, you'll want to do some research in advance. See what the prices are for the items you're interested in, to get a sense for what's a fair deal. Then, when you show up to the pawn shop, you won't have to worry about being taken advantage of and paying more than you have to.

Once you have a target price in mind, you can start the negotiating process off on the right terms—as you won't be prone to putting out low-ball offers. Just be willing to budge from the target price some because the pawn shop is in the business of making money, after all.

Avoid Certain Items

A pawn shop is a great resource for many items, including jewelry, DVDs, and tools. However, there are also items you should stay away from—so that you can protect yourself as the buyer. These items typically include televisions, small appliances, computers, and vacuum cleaners.

The aforementioned items have a lot of working parts, and it's virtually impossible to test them out completely at the pawn shop. This is particularly true regarding computers, which are prone to system malfunctions, viruses, and other errors. You should only purchase these items if you're confident in their condition or are willing to take the chance of them not working properly.

Be Aware of Certain Policies and Procedures

Seeing all of the cool items in a pawn shop, it's rather easy to get distracted and purchase on impulse. You need to avoid this, however, and make sure you read the pawn shop's fine print regarding their policies.

You want to know what their return policies are, if they even have them. You also need to familiarize yourself with the pawn shop's authenticity procedures. You wouldn't want to buy an expensive engagement ring, for example, and find out later that the diamonds are completely fake.

There are so many great items you can get from a pawn shop, often times at a better price than you could find anywhere else. As long as you do your homework and buy from reputable pawn shops, you can come out on the winning side of these fun negotiations.
